Howling Wolf Lodge - Tahoe Donner - Truckee, CA

The flat driveway has plenty of parking that can accommodate up to a 24 ft wake surf boat. You will love this cabin in the woods, complete with an extra-large hot tub for 8 people, a built-in outdoor gas fire pit, and a dry sauna. Great for summer fun and winter snow play. It is at 7,000 feet of elevation in Tahoe Donner so it gets a large amount of snow in the winter. Donner Lake is less than 5 miles away. Tahoe Donner guest passes are available to access the private boat launch at the East end of Donner Lake.

The space

We bought this Tahoe Donner cabin in 2009 with no intentions of making it a rental so all of the furnishings, beds upgrades, etc are ultra-high-end and will be there for your use.

Guest access

You will have access to everything except the 3rd car garage, master closet, and upper pantry (we keep some personal items in those spots). The gas fire pit is available for your use but requires that an adult attend it at all times while it is on.  People who live in the forest are hypersensitive about possible forest fires, as they should be.

Other things to note

  • Make sure to bring marshmallows for the fire pit, swimsuits for the hot tub. We have the towels and skewers available for your use.
  • Easy wake surf boat parking in the large flat driveway!
  • Truck and SUV-friendly with 2 garage spaces
  • Driveway in wintertime has a  plow service. 1 plow every 24 hours when it snows more than 4 inches.

Beautiful spacious home

Beautiful spacious home with excellent communication with the host. Many amenities. Very large hot tub, Gas grill, sauna. There’s really 4 BR, the lower level room has connecting rooms. The bunk beds are full size on the bottom and a twin stacked on top. All of the bunks have a private tv. Super cool room. Super comfy couch, great for lounging with a movie after a hard earned day on the slopes. Would absolutely stay again!

Phenomenal!!!! Went up for a weekend with 5 friends and we had such a great time. Hot tub and sauna are A+. Home was incredibly cozy. Huge great grill for BBQ. Very comfortable couches and great big dining room table. Snowshoes for snowy adventure! Highly recommend.

Where you’ll be

This Tahoe Donner cabin is tucked up in the high forest where you can hear even the slightest breezes wisp through the pine trees. The Alder Creek Adventure Center is less than half a mile away and has a small restaurant, bike rentals, horseback riding, and cross country skiing. The golf course, Lodge, and restaurant are about two miles away. Downtown Truckee is a 10-15 minute drive with two ways (one is a back route that is sometimes faster if there are no weather conditions and depending on what is happening that day etc.). Lake Tahoe is a 25-30 minute drive. Palisades Tahoe and Northstar are 20-25 minute drives unless there is a lot of traffic like on busy winter ski weekends, then it is up to the traffic timing. You can always ski at Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort (it’s small but fun, inexpensive and extremely convenient), which is just under a mile from the cabin and takes about 2 minutes by car. You can see the back side from the front deck.

Getting around

  • Getting around to the amenities in Tahoe Donner is fun and easy by bike in the non snowy months (bring your bikes). There are tons of single track trails and you can get to them right out of the cabin’s front door. We always have a vehicle with us to get around the area but we have had guests who have flown in and used Uber and Lyft to get around (I wouldn’t recommend that if you have to take a lot of gear (skis and stuff).

Additional rules

  • This is a blissfully quiet, non-smoking cabin in the woods. It sits at 7,000 feet. If you want a place to get loud and party then this is not the place. It is a very quiet neighborhood and the neighbors do not appreciate the extra noise. We do have Bluetooth speakers for music inside but we ask for outside lights and outside noise to be shut down after 9 pm. We try hard to respect our neighbors. Also, we don’t allow smoking or pets in our residence.
